_______________, _______________, _______________,
_______________; Francis West, grandfather of Ruth (West)
Cartwright, was a house carpenter by trade. He was born about 1606
in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England and he left there as a young man
to come to New England on the invitation of a Mr. Thomas of
Marshfield, Mass. He was a single man and he settled in Duxbury,
Mass. There he met and married Margery Reeves, February 27, 1639,
by home he had five children: Samuel, Thomas, Peter, Mary and
Ruth. so wrote Zuebolon West (1770 - 1770) a judge and a great
grandson of the immigrant. Duxbury records show that as a
carpenter, he built a pair of stocks for the town in 1640. In
1640-42, he was a member of the Grand Jury. In 1642, he bought a
house and some land in Millbrook (Duxbury) and in 1643 he was on
the list of those "able to bear arms". Admitted a Freeman,
Plymouth colony, 1656. In 1638, he was a surveyor of highways in
Duxbury and was constable in 1661. He died at Duxbury, Jan. 21,
1692, at the ripe old age of 86. During the last years of his
life, his son, Peter, cared for him and his estate at the time of
his death, valued at 16 pounds, was left to Peter. The exact
connection of Francis West with the Wests of Salisbury, England,
has never been established, although there are claims, yet to be
verified, that he was of the De?al War-West of that place (Mack,
Edward Cartwright of Nantucket MA, p. 7.)

Dr.

WEST
(Mack, Edward Cartwright of Nantucket MA, p. 7.)
- Biography: __ ___ ____
_______________, _______________, _______________,
_______________; Dr. Thomas West, father of Ruth (West) Cartwright
was born in 1646 and died Sept. 7, 1706, aged 60. He was the son
of Francis and Margery (Reeves) West. His mother died Feb. 16,
1723 at the age of 75 years. Dr. West married Elizabeth Thomas,
daughter of Nathaniel Thomas of Plymouth and they were parents of
several children. He was in Plymouth in 1667 and 1671 and after
1673 resided at Martha's Vineyard, where most of his children were
born. He was not only a practicing physician, but perhaps also a
lawyer, for he was called "The King's Attorney" in 1681 and "Their
Majestie's Attorney" in 1689. He joined the Sabbitarian Baptist
Church at Newport, R.I. in 1692, but the record shows that he was
dismissed from it in 1702. Many of his descendants today are
members of that faith, among them the descendants of Ruth (West)
Cartwright.
- The Sabbitarian Baptist Church is
the present Seventh Day Baptist Church. It was organized January
3, 1672 at Newport, R.I. and was the first Seventh Day Baptist
Church in America. Most of its members at the time of its
organization resided at a place what is now known as the village
of Ashaway, R.I., about four miles from Westerly. They retained
their membership in the Newport Church until 1708 when they
orgainzed the First Hopkinton Seventh Day Baptist Church at
Hopkinton, R.I. This church continues, but the Newport Church is
now extinct. The building is now owned by the Newport Historical
Society and has been built into their brick building. Seventh Day
Baptists of that section of Rhode Island have a meeting in the old
Newport Church once in every five years.
- Dr. West's will, dated January 5,
1697/6, mentions his six sons, but makes no reference to his
daughters, who are, however, mentioned in a division of his real
estate in 1722 (Mack, Edward Cartwright of Nantucket MA, p.
